Brief Description about the Department

As the hospital is stepping the ladder of progress, the nursing department has also achieved several milestones in the year 2012-2013.   At present we have separate wards for male and female patients. Each section of the patients are kept separately such as  preoperative patients, post operative patients , Radiotherapy, chemotherapy, palliative care patients, ICU care patients and medical oncology patients.  In each section we have experienced staffs, to give extreme care, frequent fumigations and regular cleaning in the wards. Good Nutrition recommended by the dietician is given to the patients; provision for liquid diet to the patients with Ryle’s tube is taken care of. Nursing services is rendered to Brach therapy, CT, MRI, Scanning, endoscopy. Our Nursing Staffs are efficient and always alert to give nursing care to the patients whenever needed and wherever the patients are.

The nursing staffs have attended various training programmes conducted in other reputed hospitals to update their knowledge on the current status. We are conducting regular CNE programmes, in service education, workshops, health educations to the patients and bystanders. We are attending early detection camps conducted by the community oncology departments &   providing Home care services twice a week through the Department of pain & palliative Medicine. Drug Bank provides free medicines to the poor patients admitted in wards. Medicines are collected from Doctors in private hospitals &various organizations to the Drug Bank. Various formats for requisition forms   have been prepared. We assure good quality of care to all patients. Awareness classes is given to the patients and by standers. Regular MSc Nursing Oncology posting and Internship in BSc Nursing  from various nursing schools of Kannur & Kasaragod districts is given.

  1. Periodic In service education to staff nurses about pain management, infection control, stoma care etc.
  2. Live telecast from faculty from California was highlighted the national conference

Achievements and Facilities available

  • Conducted a training programme on BLS/ACLS by American Heart Association to Nursing Staffs. It   was   three days training for two batches. (3rd,4th,5th,10th,11th,12th of july 2015)
  • CCNM-2015 – CNE on critical care management conducted on 26th july 2015.
  • As a part of 15th anniversary of MCC, we conducted a CNE on Early detection of cancer challenges on 13th dec 2015.
  • Essentials in stoma care- CNE and workshop conducted on 16th jan 2016.
  • CVAD-Theory and practical class given to all nursing staff by faculty from TMH Mumbai on 30th jan 2016.
  • A class on Blood collection by BD syringes and iv access on 12th&13th oct 2015.

INSERVICE EDUCATION

  • BLS/ACLS classes and training to all nursing staff by trained doctors in sept/oct 2015.
  • BLS/ACLS – training update given by faculty frim MCC to all nursing staffs on jan/feb 2016.
  • Pain management class to all staff on 12th feb 2016.
  • A class and discussion regarding Infection control done on 11th march 2016.
  • Lymphodema class and practices given to all staffs on 19th march 2016.

CELEBRATIONS

  • Nurses Day 12th May 2015- One week programmes include Academic and nonacademic activities.
  • World cancer day on 4th feb 2016-“we can,I can” Health education and awareness programme conducted for patients and relatives.
  • Onapookkalam- competition conducted for In patients and relatives on 26th sept 2015.
  • National conference on Recent Innovation in nursing care conducted on 12-11-2016. Faculties from   major hospitals were present. An interaction with faculty from California through skype also present
  • BLS,ACLS Training done for 18 Staff Nurses by American Heart Association  for 3 days from 26th August 2016 to 28th August 2016  and 3rd March 2017 to 5th March 2017
  • CVAD Clinichas been started and two more staff nurses were sent to TMH Mumbai for training

Seminar/Workshops/Conferences/ Training organized

  • BLS/ACLS training  ,Practical class on PICC insertion, Classes conducted  on CVAD by BARD.
  • Two staff nurses were send for Post Basic Oncology Training.
  • Two more staff nurses were sent to TMH Mumbai for training
